This is a beautiful and audacious YA story and I really enjoyed it.Six years ago, Maddie, the daughter of a secret-service agent, and Logan, the son of the President of the United States were both ten and best friends. Then, something happened and Maddie moved to Alaska with her father.
Fast-forrard six years and Maddie is however in Alaska. She has been living with her male parent, dwelling house-schooled, and learning survival skills. All gets disrupted when Logan is sent to Alaska to spend some time with them and just when he is starts getting settled ends up kidnapped. This is the start of the story and the residuum is an adventurous journeying.
The story takes place in an isolated region of Alaska and the characters are likable. I constitute the novel to be entertaining, romantic, and fun.
Overall, I enjoyed it and recommend it to readers of YA and contemporary fiction.

This was such a sweet and piece of cake read.
Maddie was a girly girl who can survive in the worst possible wilderness situation. I know it doesn't sound as badass every bit you would recollect, only this book put a new spin on being your best self without compromising who you are.
Maddie grew up being best friends with the son of the president of the The states but an unfortunate event split them apart, when they found each other, their friendship wasn't every bit rosy equally it was in the past. Information technology took a life a four.5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️✨

A cute, quick read that you'll probably enjoy if you like survival stories. There is also a good dose of friends-to-hate-to-attraction.
Simply downside was that Maddie could be super annoying. She was acting that way on purpose, simply let's only say she excelled at it.
Content warning: Russian terrorists, being taken hostage, falling, violence, injury, survival in wintry wilderness.

Maddy Manchester is the girl of the (onetime) head of the Secret Service. Following the attempted kidnap of the Offset Lady, Maddy's father moves them to the wilderness of Alaska, cutting off from human civilisation, for reasons unknown. In doing this, she leaves backside her best friend Logan, the son of the President. 6 years later, Logan is sent to Alaska post-obit a string of misdemeanours to find Maddy completely changed from the girl he knew, and hating his guts.
What follows is typical Ally Carter. And information technology'due south great.
I have to say, Maddy Manchester might be ane of my favourite Carter heroines. After Kat Bishop, of course, only I might even go so far as to say she's better than Cammie Morgan. I loved her so much, even despite the slight "not similar other girls" affair going on at the start (which, peradventure fair enough, I wouldn't know many girls who could survive alone in Alaska myself, permit alone throw a hatchet with accuracy into a tree trunk so). I think one of the problems I had with Embassy Row was that I didn't really connect with Grace that much, or even like her really, in the way I had with Cammie and Kat. Maddy is a lot more like those two, and it'due south like returning to something familiar (imagine thinking I wouldn't die for Maddy Manchester).
Usually, I also really like the beloved interests. However, the thing that slightly irritated me about Logan was that he never seemed to realise how capable Maddy was, non even really at the cease. Information technology was all him being like "no, Maddy, don't do this!!" similar this isn't a completely different Maddy than the one he knew anile 10. There's also the whole thing where whenever one of the bad guys so much as looks at Maddy, he pretty much jumps them and starts yelling "don't even look at her!!", like, my dude, chill. I know your masculinity has been impugned on and you desire to make up for it because Maddy is clearly more than capable than you could ever wish to be but please. But chill.
There was also the modest matter of the twist at the terminate existence a little out in that location, just I kind of look that with Ally Carter so, while a bit foreign, it wasn't similar it brought me out of the story any.

And then, yes I opened the ebook for no reason and the reason I had it on my laptop was because someone repeatedly told me information technology was a good book. I read the start and I didn't want to read more than of information technology. Information technology wasn't the kind of book I was in mood for then but and then once again, Maddie was so cute and innocent and I loved her so then much. And then I read on and before I knew information technology, I had read one-tertiary of it. It was actually actually good specially the first half but the last one-tertiary kinda took away a star. It merely didn't seem realistic and they seemed too lucky for everyone and I was disappointed a little. But it was still adept. It kinda reminded me of THE MAYBE Young man but the premise was completely different. I call up the end came off a little meh? There were many twists but still it felt like too many twists were being forced into those pages and I think it would've made for a much ameliorate terminate if it was kept somewhat uncomplicated.
As well I guess I needed some more detail about the end telling me what would happen for them side by side but approximate non.(view spoiler)[ Also I wanted her to show some more than anger when she found out about his prevarication. And I wanted to know why Logan idea his father hated him. Can't be those tests! The underlying reasons for the attacks were kinda stupid and I wish it was improve at the end. The writing was good. The characters were fine. I gauge Maddie was the all-time! I would similar to read more of her books but in the summertime.
If you're looking for a fun read this is it. Fun and a little adventure.

Overall I enjoyed as I like Ally Carter and her teen spy books. But it was not fantastic, only a proficient read. Enjoyable teenage/YA tale total of action, suspense and some great, sharp narrative. All the boxes are ticked hither for a practiced, no nonsense escapist read with decent characters and keen location. It's a fast paced read following the story of Logan and Maddie on the run in cold Alaska from Russian agents.

(view spoiler)[I'm not even going to affect hot-push button bug on Russia. I'thou just going to enquire questions about the world in the book: 1. Why would a strange delegation be allowed to stroll around within the White House unsupervised? 2. Why would the Commencement Lady be allowed to stroll around where there are foreign - or any! - guests, also unsupervised? 3. Explain to me what on earth has been happening with US-Russia relationships in the 6 years since the kidnapping try! They almost succeeded in kidnapping the Kickoff Lady! They shot the President's kid! No mention of, I don't know, state of war? Sanctions? Diplomats being thrown out? At that place WAS SUPPOSED TO Exist A STATE DINNER! 4. And what is Upward with that garbage at the end with the Wolf's son being a hot-headed kid who got carried away and obsessed with the First Lady? Howdy. THIS WAS A DIPLOMATIC DELEGATION! THE Kid AND HIS Picayune THUG PALS WERE PUT ONTO THE GUEST Listing! five. I'm taking a moment to note that Alaska might be big and empty and scary, only information technology is also very close to Russian federation. You couldn't go to the Caribbean? Hawaii? Somewhere Russian mob tattoos would exist more likely to be spotted? six. Okay. Walk me through kidnapping endeavour number 2. Step i: go Maddie's dad. How, exactly? He was flying to pick upwards medicine, right? They didn't shoot down his aeroplane, because Stefan was able to fly information technology away. And then how'd he end up, aeroplane unharmed, in the eye of nowhere, when evidently he got into the plane in total view of the new Undercover Service detail? seven. Footstep one is probably FIND THEM, actually. How'd they know where Logan was? The country of Alaska is big and empty, call up? viii. Sooooo. Why'd they accept to go afterward the saturday phone? 9. They got away because the killer Russian who threatened to cut off fingers and cutting out tongues actually has a heart of gold? And a sister? Are you kidding me? And the idea that beingness a quippy American teenager is enough to distract a bunch of psycho terrorist killers: it's certainly given as much folio time every bit the bridge stuff, and information technology only seems similar - well - an unrealistic fantasy. (The span stuff is really cool. The quips are INCREDIBLY FRUSTRATING.) ten. This is where I first started shaking my head. Allow'S Go THIS ALL STRAIGHT. Old Russian Mafia Dude is dying. He wants both revenge and a successor. And he thinks starting a war by assassinating the President'due south child is the way to exercise things? Past sending an incompetent centre-of-gilded guy alone to take care of phase one, no less? I MEAN. a) WAY TO UNDERCUT YOURSELF! b) Even if yous hadn't started a war with the starting time kidnapping (HOW?), Merely WHAT IS THE Plan HERE? DID YOU Become PERMISSION FROM THE EX-KGB HEAD HONCHO RUNNING THE Bear witness BACK IN MOSCOW? HOW DOES THIS Make SENSE? (Why am I always and so infuriated past plot holes in light entertaining Girl Power fluff???) 11. This is a bullet point devoted entirely to the last two pages of the book. They're very sweetness! At that place'south nothing really wrong with them! Only gahhhhh this stuff makes me want to throw things: And allow's non overlook Logan telling Maddie that she caught a kidnapper with a bear trap and a tree. Was he beingness sweetness and thoughtful by not mentioning the kidnapper she, you lot know, stabbed with a knife? Why is this entire chat so lighthearted? (School! Much more terrifying than Russian terrorists!) Likewise, what'south the timeline hither, exactly? Logan could hear men shouting. A coiffure was already unloading huge crates, and someone was setting up a tent. Soon at that place'd be cameras in the trees and a secure satellite betoken trained on this location.
Didn't they just accept to hide until the person watching the video back in DC got more than agents on the ground in Alaska?...and no matter how many strongly worded emails Maddie had written in protest, she had been strictly warned to leave her hatchet and both her knives at domicile.
Yeah, I'd like to read those strongly-worded emails. How'd they go, exactly? "I demand an official exemption to the dominion confronting bringing deadly weapons to school"? "Your dad needs surgery, Mad Canis familiaris. And physical therapy. And to sit through about a million debriefs."
And so is that... some other surgery? Has he not fifty-fifty had the first one? Wouldn't he take been operated on in Alaska? And why would Maddie'due south dad take to sit through debriefs? WHAT ABOUT MADDIE? (hibernate spoiler)]
I'm sure I'chiliad being overly persnickety. But goodness: if you're going to write a book involving politics, keep an eye out for political implications. And cliches.

It kind of seemed similar she moved to Alaska overnight with her dad. She was and then little and didn't quite sympathize why they moved so far away. So she took to writing her best friend letters every mean solar day. Unfortunately, she never received 1 back and had no thought why.
Years later, they have reunited. Logan is in Alaska at present trying to alive on the downlow. Of course things become dramatic rather rapidly. They are attacked, kidnapped, and betrayed right and left. The i matter these Russian dudes didn't count on: Her. Maddie was such a bad ass trivial ninja.
Not going to prevarication, she reminded me of the daughter in the moving picture Hanna. That'southward how bad donkey she was and she was definitely underestimated throughout the book. These 2 had earn each other's trust again and rebuild their friendship. I was definitely glad that I wasn't shoved into the romance light that much. Ally Carter is the queen of teen thriller/spy/heist novels. So far I've liked every book of hers I've read (though Heist Society is past far my favorite). While this one has some of the aforementioned political and thriller elements as many of her other novels, it is mostly a survival story set in Alaska. And in Alaska, there is a lot of things that take grit and decision to survive.
Maddie was by far my favorite character. She's tough, potent, determined, and can throw knives and hatchets with ease. Yet she too loves fancy dresses and beautiful things and worries about how her pilus looks. In other words, she's a tough girl who is not only immune to be female merely she admittedly owns information technology and her femininity at some points is crucial to the plot, and I loved that. This isn't a story where the master graphic symbol is a girl simply y'all could just as easily change her to a boy without changing the plot. No, this plot just works because Maddie is a girl and who is often underestimated past the bad guys because she is "just" a daughter.
Logan was a good character, simply non my favorite. There was a long stretch with him captured where the novel did seem to drag just a picayune bit.
I think my biggest disappointment in the volume, weird as it sounds, is that Maddie left her hatchet behind. After all the build up that she can THROW A HATCHET, she never gets a chance to employ that particular skill in the volume. She uses a like skill, and I was glad that became important for the plot, but to be honest, I actually wanted to see Maddie taking on the bad guys with her amazing hatchet skills.
But it was a minor thing, as was the short stretch of the volume where things slowed downward and dragged.
This book is nonetheless another great Ally Carter thriller.
I listened to the audiobook version, and the reader did a great job. :)

Neither Maddie nor Logan were my favorite characters (either from this writer's books or just in general), so that affected my rating. Logan did some things/some deportment that bothered me (such as: trying to strangle/attack the kidnappers, yelling "Don't expect at her" multiple times to the kidnappers, etc.).
Considering I didn't know that this volume is completely well-nigh surviving the Alaskan wilderness and running abroad from the kidnappers, I was a piffling disappointed.
